The difference between GA4 events vs key events is selection: every measured interaction is an event, while a key event is one the organisation has marked as especially important. The underlying event still exists; the designation changes how its importance is reported and used in connected workflows.
The distinction should reflect business meaning. A page view can be an event without being a key event. A completed purchase or verified lead can be both.
Quick answer: Events describe what happened. Key events identify which of those events represent important progress. Mark only stable, validated outcomes as key events. Google Ads conversions are related but separately configured actions used for advertising measurement and optimisation.
1. What is a GA4 event?
A GA4 event measures an interaction or occurrence on a website or app. Events can represent user activity such as a page view, click, file download, form start, purchase or refund, as well as system behaviour in app environments.
GA4 events fall into broad implementation groups:
- Automatically collected events: collected as part of the basic setup in applicable environments.
- Enhanced measurement events: common web interactions collected when the relevant setting is enabled.
- Recommended events: predefined names and parameters for common business actions.
- Custom events: organisation-specific interactions that do not fit the recommended model.
Events can carry parameters such as page location, item ID, value, currency or form type. Parameters explain the event; they should have documented definitions and appropriate privacy controls.
An event appearing in DebugView proves receipt during that test. It does not by itself prove accurate counting, reporting or business relevance.
2. What is a GA4 key event?
A GA4 key event is an event marked as important for the organisation. Marking it does not create a new user interaction. It tells Analytics that occurrences of this event deserve key-event reporting.
Good candidates include:
- completed purchase;
- accepted lead submission;
- confirmed booking;
- completed account application;
- subscription activation;
- another outcome tied to a defined business goal.
Weak candidates include scrolls, page views, CTA clicks and form starts when they do not represent success. These can remain useful diagnostic events.
The label should be governed. Someone must own the definition, decide whether every occurrence counts and verify changes to the implementation.
3. How key events differ from the former GA4 conversions
GA4 previously used “conversion” for events marked as important inside Analytics. Google renamed that concept to key events to distinguish on-site or in-app behavioural importance from conversions used in advertising contexts.
The practical model is:
| Concept | Main purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Event | Record an interaction or occurrence | form_start |
| Key event | Identify an important Analytics outcome | generate_lead after confirmed submission |
| Google Ads conversion | Measure or optimise an advertising outcome | Qualified lead conversion configured in Ads |
Historical interfaces, exports or articles may still use “GA4 conversions.” When reading documentation, check its publication date and whether it refers to Analytics reporting or Google Ads.
The terminology change does not remove attribution differences between products. GA4 and Google Ads can still report different totals because settings, scope and attribution differ.
4. Decide which events should become key events
Use a four-part test:
Outcome
Does the event represent real progress rather than interest alone?
Reliability
Does it fire on confirmed success, once per intended occurrence and with the right parameters?
Interpretability
Can a stakeholder explain exactly what one count means?
Actionability
Will the event support a decision about content, product, marketing or customer experience?
If an event fails the reliability test, do not mark it as key to make it more visible. Repair the implementation first.
For lead generation, separate form_start, form_submit_success, qualified_lead and opportunity_created if those stages are available. Each answers a different question. The deepest reliable stage may be the best advertising goal, while earlier events explain funnel loss.
5. Apply the model to ecommerce events
GA4 ecommerce events describe stages such as viewing an item, adding it to a cart, beginning checkout, purchasing and refunding. They use prescribed names and item parameters so standard ecommerce reporting can interpret them.
Not every ecommerce event should be a key event. view_item and add_to_cart are valuable for journey analysis but normally do not equal revenue. purchase is commonly important because it represents a completed transaction, provided the implementation sends a unique transaction ID and correct value, currency and items.
Use the funnel diagnostically:
- item views show product interest;
- add-to-cart events show stronger consideration;
- checkout events expose process progression;
- purchases show completed orders;
- refunds correct the commercial picture.
Validate all stages, but reserve the key-event designation for outcomes the business wants highlighted.
6. Avoid common event and key-event mistakes
Use this checklist:
- Event names follow recommended conventions where appropriate.
- Names use a consistent case and format.
- The trigger represents the documented action.
- Duplicate Google tag and GTM implementations are excluded.
- Required ecommerce parameters are present.
- Personally identifiable information is not sent to GA4.
- Consent behaviour has been tested.
- Diagnostic events are not all marked as key.
- Key events have an owner and business definition.
- Google Ads imports are reviewed separately.
- CRM or transaction totals are reconciled.
Common failures include creating separate event names for every page when a parameter would be clearer, changing names without updating reports, and using a click as a proxy for successful completion.
7. Build a measurement hierarchy people can use
Organise events into three levels:
- Diagnostic signals: page views, scrolls, starts and clicks that explain behaviour.
- Lead or transaction signals: completed forms, bookings, purchases and subscriptions.
- Quality or value signals: qualified leads, opportunities, retained customers, margin or refunds.
GA4 can hold useful parts of this hierarchy, but the CRM, ecommerce platform or finance system may remain authoritative for later outcomes. Document how identifiers and timestamps connect them.
Review the hierarchy before each major campaign or site change. Remove obsolete events from reporting conventions, but consider the effect on historical comparisons before renaming active events.
If your current GA4 event list does not distinguish activity from outcomes, Growthjunction’s analytics and tracking service can map the business decisions first and then repair the collection path.
Frequently asked questions
Are all GA4 key events also events?
Yes. A key event is an existing event marked as important. The key-event designation does not replace the underlying event.
Are key events the same as Google Ads conversions?
No. They are connected concepts, but Google Ads conversions are configured for advertising measurement and optimisation. Review conversion settings after importing or creating an action.
Can I mark a custom event as a key event?
Yes, if the custom event has a stable definition and accurately represents an important outcome. Prefer recommended events when they fit the action.
Should `add_to_cart` be a key event?
Usually it is more useful as a diagnostic ecommerce event, while purchase represents the completed outcome. A business can choose differently when its objective genuinely ends at that action, but the definition should be explicit.
Does marking an event as key change historical data?
Do not assume the designation will restate all historical reporting. Treat configuration changes as effective from the point they are applied and annotate the date for analysis.
