<p><strong>3. <h2 id="common-linking-mistakes">What are the most common GA4 linking mistakes?</h2>

  <li style="color: var(--sub); font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 8px;"><strong>No link at all (38% of accounts).</strong> The GA4 property and Google Ads account exist independently, with zero data sharing. Often set up by someone who knew how to install GA4 but was not aware the Ads link was a separate step.</li>
  <li style="color: var(--sub); font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.8; margin-bottom: 8px;"><strong>Linked but "Enable Personalized Advertising" was left off (29%).</strong> The link exists but audiences are not shared. This disables all GA4-based remarketing in Google Ads without any visible error message - it just silently does not work.</li>

<h2 id="how-to-verify-the-link">How do you verify the link is working correctly?</h2>

<p><strong>3. Auto-tagging is active.</strong> In Google Ads, go to Settings > Account Settings and confirm "Auto-tagging: Tag URLs" is enabled. Then visit your website by clicking one of your own ads (use a different browser or incognito) and check the landing page URL - it should contain a <code>gclid=</code> parameter (gclid = Google Click ID - the unique identifier Google Ads appends to every ad click). If it does not, auto-tagging is disabled.</p>

<h2 id="real-example-linking">In client accounts: what breaks when GA4 is not linked</h2>
<p>Across client accounts, one of the most frustrating versions of this problem is when the account looks correct on the surface but the link is broken underneath. I have seen accounts with GA4 installed, GTM in place, and conversion tracking apparently active, while the GA4 property linked to Google Ads was actually an old test property. The live site was sending data somewhere else entirely.</p>
<p>The result is predictable: campaigns keep spending, reporting looks half-alive, and bidding never gets the signal it actually needs. Once the correct property is linked and the right conversions are imported, the account usually becomes much easier to steer because Google Ads is finally learning from the real site instead of a dead setup. <h2 id="verknuepfung-pruefen">Wie prüfst du, ob die Verknüpfung funktioniert?</h2>
<p>Nach der Einrichtung der Verknüpfung prüfe drei Dinge:</p>
<p><strong>1. GA4-Verwaltung bestätigt die Verknüpfung.</strong> In GA4 > Verwaltung > Produkt-Links > Google Ads-Verknüpfungen sollte die Verknüpfung im Tab <strong>Abgeschlossen</strong> mit Status "Verknüpft" erscheinen. Wenn nach 24 Stunden "Ausstehend" erscheint, gibt es ein Zugriffsberechtigungsproblem.</p>
<p><strong>2. GA4-Zielgruppen erscheinen in Google Ads.</strong> In Google Ads > Tools > Gemeinsame Bibliothek > Zielgruppenmanager, wechsle zum Tab "Deine Datensegmente". Innerhalb von 24-48 Stunden nach der Verknüpfung solltest du dort GA4-Zielgruppen sehen. Wenn du nur "Ähnliche Segmente" siehst und nichts von GA4, wurde "Personalisierte Werbung aktivieren" wahrscheinlich nicht angehakt.</p>
<p><strong>3. Auto-Tagging ist aktiv.</strong> Gehe in Google Ads zu Einstellungen > Kontoeinstellungen und bestätige, dass "Auto-Tagging: URLs taggen" aktiviert ist. Besuche dann deine Website, indem du auf eine deiner eigenen Anzeigen klickst (nutze einen anderen Browser oder Inkognito-Modus) und prüfe die URL der Zielseite - sie sollte einen <code>gclid=</code>-Parameter enthalten (gclid = Google Click ID - die eindeutige Kennung, die Google Ads jedem Anzeigenklick anhängt). Wenn nicht, ist Auto-Tagging deaktiviert.</p>

<h2 id="praxisbeispiel-verknuepfung">Aus Kundenaudits: Was kaputt geht, wenn GA4 nicht verknüpft ist</h2>
<p>Aus meiner Arbeit mit Kunden ist die frustrierendste Variante dieses Problems, wenn das Konto oberflächlich korrekt aussieht, aber die Verknüpfung darunter kaputt ist. Die einzige Änderung war, dass der Bidding-Algorithmus endlich wusste, was er tun sollte.</p>
<p>Die Lektion: Bestätige immer, dass die verknüpfte Property in GA4-Verwaltung mit der GA4-Property-ID auf der Live-Website übereinstimmt. Du kannst das in GA4-Verwaltung > Property-Einstellungen überprüfen - die numerische Property-ID sollte mit dem übereinstimmen, was GTM auf der Website feuert.</p>

<h2 id="what-you-need-before-you-start">What do you need before you start?</h2>
<p>Before setting anything up, confirm you have access to three tools: your GA4 property, Google Tag Manager (GTM), and your Google Ads account. All three need to be connected. If GA4 is not yet on your site, that is a five-minute step done via GTM - you add one GA4 Configuration tag, publish the container, and GA4 starts collecting data immediately. You do not need FTP access, WordPress admin, or any code editor.</p>
<p>You also need to know what you want to track. The most important conversion actions for Swiss SMBs running Google Ads are typically:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>Form submissions</strong> - contact forms, quote requests, booking forms</li>
  <li><strong>Phone calls</strong> - click-to-call on mobile (requires a separate Google Ads call extension setup)</li>
  <li><strong>Thank-you page views</strong> - the page someone lands on after a successful form submission</li>
  <li><strong>Button clicks</strong> - for sites without a dedicated thank-you page</li>
</ul>
<p>For most local service businesses, form submissions and phone calls are the only two that matter. Start there.</p>

<h2 id="how-to-create-conversion-event-in-ga4">How do you create a conversion event in GA4?</h2>
<p>GA4 tracks everything as "events". Some events are collected automatically - page_view, session_start, first_visit. Others you create yourself. A conversion in GA4 is simply a regular event that you have marked as important.</p>
<p>The simplest method for a contact form submission is the thank-you page approach:</p>

<p>Creating the conversion in GA4 is only half the job. Google Ads will not automatically use it for bidding until you explicitly import it. <h2 id="how-to-verify-your-tracking">How do you verify your conversion tracking is actually working?</h2>
<p>Never assume it works, always verify. The fastest method is GTM Preview mode combined with GA4 DebugView. In real accounts, this is the step people skip most often because the setup looks finished once the tag exists. That assumption is what creates weeks of wasted spend later.</p>

<h2 id="what-about-consent-mode">What about Consent Mode V2 - do I need it?</h2>
<p>If your site shows a cookie consent banner, which is the norm for Swiss and EU business sites, you need to configure Consent Mode V2 in GTM (<a href="https://www.edoeb.admin.ch/edoeb/de/home/datenschutz/grundlagen.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">EDOEB guidance</a>; Google Consent Mode documentation, 2026). Without it, Google cannot model conversions from users who decline cookies, which is one of the most common reasons measured conversion volume drops below what the business is actually seeing.</p>
<p>Consent Mode V2 uses Google's modelling to fill in conversion data for cookie-declined users, based on behaviour patterns from users who did consent. It does not track those users directly. It estimates conversions statistically. In account cleanups, that usually improves signal quality for smart bidding even when the raw lead flow itself did not change.</p>
<p>Setting up Consent Mode V2 requires one additional GTM tag and a connection to your consent management platform (CMP) - tools like Cookiebot, Borlabs Cookie, or OneTrust have ready-made GTM templates. <p>Consent Mode V2 nutzt Googles Modellierung, um Conversion-Daten für Nutzer zu schätzen, die keine Cookies akzeptiert haben, basierend auf Verhaltensmustern von einwilligenden Nutzern. Die praktische Wirkung ist simpel: Das Signal für Smart Bidding wird sauberer, obwohl sich der echte Leadfluss nicht zwangsläufig verändert. Die Einrichtung erfordert einen zusätzlichen GTM-Tag und eine Verbindung zu deiner Consent-Management-Plattform, zum Beispiel Cookiebot, Borlabs Cookie oder OneTrust.</p>

<h2 id="praxisbeispiel-schweizer-kmu">Aus Kundenaudits: Was wirklich schief geht</h2>

<h2 id="create-property">Step 1 - Create the GA4 property</h2>
<p>In Google Analytics, go to Admin → Create → Property. Give it your business name, select your reporting time zone (Europe/Zurich for Swiss businesses) and currency (CHF). Select "Web" when prompted for the platform.</p>
<p>You'll be directed to create a Data Stream. Enter your website URL. Leave Enhanced Measurement on - it tracks some useful automatic events. After saving, you'll see your <strong>Measurement ID</strong> (G-XXXXXXXXXX) at the top of the stream details page. Copy this - it's the only ID you need for the next step.</p>

<h2 id="install-gtm">Step 2 - Install Google Tag Manager and add the GA4 tag</h2>

<p>Page views are recorded automatically. What you actually need to measure are actions that show business intent: form submissions, phone-call clicks, email clicks, and for e-commerce, purchases.</p>
<p><strong>Contact form submissions (thank-you page method):</strong> If your form redirects to a thank-you page after submission, create a GTM trigger for that path and fire a GA4 Event tag with an event name like <code>generate_lead</code>. This is usually the cleanest setup.</p>
<p><strong>Contact form submissions (no thank-you page):</strong> If your form uses AJAX and the URL does not change on submission, you need a Form Submission trigger in GTM. Test carefully. In audits, AJAX forms are one of the most common sources of broken conversion tracking because they look fine to the user while the event never fires.</p>
<p><strong>Phone call clicks:</strong> Add a Click trigger in GTM that fires when someone clicks a <code>tel:</code> link. Create a GA4 Event tag with an event name like <code>click_to_call</code>. This does not confirm the call was completed, but it is still a useful intent signal.</p>
<p>Once events are recording in GA4, mark them as conversions: Admin → Events → toggle the "Mark as conversion" switch next to <code>generate_lead</code> and <code>click_to_call</code>. <h2 id="link-google-ads">Step 4 - Link to Google Ads and Search Console</h2>
<p>In GA4, go to Admin → Product Links → Google Ads Links → Link. Select your Google Ads account and confirm. This is a separate step from setting up conversion tracking - the link enables audience sharing and attribution, while the conversion import (done in Google Ads) enables smart bidding signals. <p>For Search Console: Admin → Product Links → Search Console Links → Add link. Select your Search Console property. After 24-48 hours, organic search data (queries, clicks, impressions) will appear in GA4 under Reports → Acquisition → Search Console.</p>

  <li><strong>No conversion events</strong> - GA4 installed, page views recording, but no events marked as conversions. You have traffic data, not business data. Smart bidding in Google Ads has nothing to optimise toward.</li>
  <li><strong>AJAX form not tracked</strong> - the thank-you page method only works if the URL changes. If your contact form submits without a URL change, you need the Form Submission trigger method. Verify by submitting a test enquiry and checking GA4 Realtime → Events immediately after.</li>
  <li><strong>No Google Ads link</strong> - GA4 and Google Ads exist independently. Conversion data in GA4 never reaches the bidding algorithm. The link step is separate from conversion tracking setup and is one of the most commonly missed steps.</li>

<p>Hier scheitern die meisten Setups. GA4 misst Seitenaufrufe automatisch. Was es nicht automatisch erkennt: dass jemand ein Kontaktformular abgesendet, auf deine Telefonnummer geklickt, eine Beratung gebucht oder einen Kauf abgeschlossen hat.</p>
<p>Für Kontaktformulare ist eine Thank-you-Seite der einfachste Weg: Ein GTM-Trigger feuert ein GA4-Event, wenn die Bestätigungsseite geladen wird. Der zuverlässigere Ansatz ist ein GTM-Trigger, der nur nach einer verifizierten erfolgreichen Übermittlung feuert - damit versehentliche Aufrufe der Danke-Seite die Conversion-Zahl nicht verfälschen. Für Anrufe ist das Tracking von Klicks auf <code>tel:</code>-Links ein Minimum - es bestätigt nicht, dass ein Anruf stattgefunden hat, aber ein Klick auf die Telefonnummer ist ein starkes kommerzielles Signal.</p>
<p>Bei externen Tools - Buchungssystemen, Zahlungsanbieter-Weiterleitungen, eingebetteten Formularen auf Subdomains - ist oft Cross-Domain-Tracking-Konfiguration nötig.
